University of Portsmouth的前身為科學與藝術學校Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and the Arts，成立於1869年。自從1992年改為綜合性大學至今，它已成為英國規模較大的大學之一，擁有學生20,000名左右。被譽為全英其中一所表現最優秀及具領導地位的現代化大學之一。大學與工商界及志願團體保持緊密合作關係，所以該校有很高的就業率。
